Judy Bartlein, ACP Facilitator
When her mother was dying of ALS in Northern California, Judy Bartlein witnessed just how important hospice services and support could be -- to families as well as the dying patient. A few years later, a newspaper ad for HSB’s volunteer training classes inspired her to apply, and she became a PCS volunteer in May 2015.
Through her 9+ years volunteering, Judy has helped many clients (including some colorful characters) at the end of their lives. She says her experiences have led her to be more thoughtful in her life, by not being so quick to respond to things and trying to be a good listener. Judy also came to the realization that although problems often can’t be fixed, it’s a gift to be present for our patients and let them lead the conversation – rarely talking about their actual illness. Although many folks assume that being a volunteer for Hospice of Santa Barbara and Get It Done SB! is sad or depressing, Judy finds that there is actually satisfaction to be had in helping patients enjoy companionship and quality of life.
As a volunteer, Judy has also completed training for NODA (No One Dies Alone), ACP, and Life Reminiscence. She has also helped out at events including Light Up a Life and Heroes of Hospice.
A 3rd generation Californian, Judy grew up in the Bay Area and moved to Santa Barbara on a lark in 1984. Her career has encompassed advertising, marketing, communications, and event planning. She has volunteered with the Red Cross, YMCA Youth & Family Services, Habitat for Humanity, and Laguna Blanca School. In her spare time, Judy loves to travel; she has visited all 50 States and always keeps her passport ready for the next adventure.
